SUMMARY:NYC ASL Tour: Art of Freedom: The Life & Work of Arthur Szyk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a curator-led tour of the Museum’s newest exhibition\, Art of Freedom: The Life & Work of Arthur Szyk\, presented with ASL interpretation. This program is designed for Deaf adults. \nLed by Charlotte Apter\, Assistant Curator of Collections at the Museum of Jewish Heritage\, this tour offers an in-depth look at Szyk’s prolific and influential career. Apter\, who helped research\, develop\, and curate the exhibition\, will guide visitors through Szyk’s powerful artistic response to the rise of fascism\, highlighting how he emerged as a leading voice in the fight for freedom\, justice\, and democracy. \nThe tour explores how the Polish-born Jewish immigrant mobilized the American war effort during World War II through his anti-Nazi illustrations\, while also advocating for European Jewry and calling the world to action during the Holocaust. Art of Freedom: The Life & Work of Arthur Szyk brings together loans from private collections and newly acquired works from the Museum’s Permanent Collection\, ranging from intricately detailed illuminated texts—including his iconic Haggadah—to sharply satirical political cartoons. Together\, these works reveal how creativity can be harnessed to confront antisemitism and defend freedom. \nCharlotte Apter is the Assistant Curator\, Collections at the Museum of Jewish Heritage\, where she is responsible for new acquisitions\, cataloging\, and interpretation of the Museum’s permanent collection. She helped research\, develop\, and curate Art of Freedom: The Life and Work of Arthur Szyk.
